Wayside Food Programs gardener harvest
To see our harvest postcardAs part of our efforts to provide healthy food to people in need, we are seeking harvest donations from area gardeners. We are looking for produce donations from gardens of all size, including home gardens, community gardens and commercial gardens.Donated food is distributed to local food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters and is used in the Wayside Community Meals Program. "We work hard to increase access to fresh produce," says Mary Zwolinski, Wayside's executive director. "This is a great way for gardeners to share their harvest and help their neighbors. We have a small garden at our building, and it's rewarding to see our produce served at our meals." In 2014, Wayside worked with area farms, backyard gardeners, the University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s Harvest for Hunger program, and Hunters for the Hungry to redistribute 6,000 lbs. of locally sourced food.Gardeners can bring donations to Wayside's operations center at 135 Walton, St., Portland. Wayside can arrange pickup of large donations. To learn more, contact Don Morrison at (207) 712-4929 or email Morrison at dmorrison@waysidemaine.org.
