On Friday the United Way of Greater Portland held their Annual Campaign Kickoff, Food Drive and Sculpture Contest. The donations collected are sourced from companies in Greater Portland who have been hosting office food drives, from anyone who comes to the event with something to donate, and from the biggest highlight of the day, the United We CAN Sculpture Contest. This year, teams from twelve Greater Portland Area businesses competed by designing and building sculptures comprised of food and or basic need items. After the judging, the sculptures are broken down and all the product used gets donated to the drive. Awards were given based on categories such as most nutritious, best in show and most on brand. While this food drive is consistently the biggest food drive annually for Wayside, this year was the biggest food drive ever in our organization's history! In just one day an impressive 19,414 lbs of food and basic need items were collected and donated. While the total weight is certainly exciting, the impact for communities across Cumberland County is even more impressive. All of the donated food will either be incorporated into our weekly community meals menu, shared at one of our monthly neighborhood mobile food pantries or redistributed to our network of partner agencies. When we work together our collective impact is strengthened! Everything we do here at Wayside is rooted in partnerships, from sourcing food to sharing food. Thank you to the United Way and all of our partners who made this event a success and continue to help us fight hunger and strengthen community.Watch coverage from the event on WMTW 8.
