Wayside is excited to announce a new partnership with Garbage to Garden, Portland's new curbside composting service.

We have always been concerned with waste in the food system here at Wayside. Our Food Rescue program saves thousands of pounds of edible food a week from entering the waste stream, redirecting it to families and individuals in need through our own programs and those of our partner food pantries. Even the food we can't save finds a use, as we've long worked with local pig farmers to find a home for food not fit for human consumption.

Our new partnership with Garbage to Garden will allow us to compost the food scraps from our new kitchen and turn them into organic compost to be used at our various garden sites.  We are thrilled to be working with this great local business, which also offers residential compost pickup service.

Garbage to Garden currently services Portland, South Portland, Falmouth, Cumberland, and Yarmouth, and is looking to add additional towns to their service area in the future.  If you are interested in starting to compost at home, it's easy to get started:

  • Pick up your bucket at Rosemont Market or other program locations.
  • Fill your bucket with all of your food waste including meat, dairy, and bones.
  • Put it out with your trash and recycling on your regular trash day and Garbage to Garden will swap it out for a fresh clean bucket to use for the following week.
  • Just make sure you go to www.garbagetogarden.org to register your pickup address and setup your billing. It's only $11 per month, or can opt to volunteer and earn free monthly credits.
  • What's more, Garbage to Garden doesn't just help you to recycle your food scraps -- you can request the finished product delivered for free in the form of MOFGA certified organic compost!
