Yesterday 40 plus faith leaders and “people of faith and conscience” came together, joined by our own Executive Director Mary Zwolinski, to speak out against the House Farm Bill being voted on in Washington as early as next week. The press conference was organized by Moral Movement Maine and the Maine Council of Churches. The current Farm Bill, a comprehensive piece of legislation that authorizes most federal policies governing food and agricultural programs, expires at the end of September. The reauthorization sponsored by Rep. Michael Conway (R-TX) passed last month by the House Agriculture Committee along a party-line vote makes significant overall cuts and puts in place disastrous barriers to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) which would reduce or end food benefits for a substantial number of participants. Together and with the help of our elected Representative, Chellie Pingree, we must ensure our most vulnerable community members continue to have access to the food that they need.Want to make your voice heard?
